Link Shortener Comparison 2026: Why Most Alternatives Fall Short on Privacy

You're picking a link shortener and the options look identical on the surface. Bitly shortens URLs. So does TinyURL. So does Linktree. So does your link shortener of choice.

Then you dig deeper and realize they're solving completely different problems—and solving them for completely different reasons.

I've spent way too much time testing link shorteners, watching where referrer data goes, checking what gets logged, and asking myself why the privacy-first ones are so hard to find. Here's what actually matters when you're comparing them.

The Referrer Header Problem (Nobody Talks About)

Most link shorteners don't mention referrer headers at all. That's because they don't think about them. They just shorten URLs.

But when someone clicks a shortened link, the destination sees the referrer—which can be the shortener's domain, the source page, or even sensitive query parameters. If you're using shortened affiliate links, your SubID leaks. If you're sharing internal documentation, your company intranet URL shows up in server logs.

Here's the thing: almost every major shortener lets this happen by default.

The privacy-first ones? There aren't many. But they do exist, and they approach this differently.

What Actually Separates Them

Referrer Stripping (The Real Differentiator)

A good link shortener strips the referrer in multiple places:

  1. HTTP headers (on the shortener's server)
  2. HTTP headers (on the destination server)
  3. HTML meta tags (to catch JavaScript redirects)

Most services do none of this. Some do one. A few do all three. If you're working with affiliate links or sensitive URLs, this matters.

Data Retention & Logging

Ask yourself: what happens when someone clicks your link?

Bitly stores everything indefinitely and uses it for targeting. TinyURL stores clicks but claims not to sell the data. TraceNull doesn't store IP addresses at all—the analytics only show click counts, no personal data.

GDPR changes the math here. If you're in Europe or have European users, storing IPs requires explicit consent. Most shorteners either skip this or bury it in ToS nobody reads.

Custom Domains & Branding

If you're sharing links publicly, a custom domain matters. Using your own domain instead of bit.ly or tinyurl.com tells people this link comes from you, not a random service.

Do you want links that expire? Some shorteners let you set this; most don't think about it.

Password Protection

You're basically choosing between: pay with money, pay with your data, or use a genuinely privacy-first service that just charges for extra features instead of monetizing you.

When You Actually Need a Paid Plan

If you're a casual user, the free tier of most services is fine. You shorten a URL, share it, nobody cares.

But if you're any of these, a paid plan makes sense:

The trap is paying for a premium plan that promises privacy but doesn't deliver it. Bitly Pro is expensive and still tracks you. You're paying to avoid the ads while they still sell your data.

Red Flags When Comparing

If they don't mention referrer stripping, they're not thinking about it. Ask them directly or don't use them for sensitive links.

If they promise "no tracking" but log IPs, they're being misleading. Click counts and IP addresses aren't the same. Both are data.

If their privacy policy is longer than their feature list, they're probably hiding something.

If they don't have a clear data retention policy, assume they keep data forever.

What to Actually Look For

Forget features for a second. Ask these questions first:

  1. Do they strip referrer headers by default?
  2. Do they log IP addresses?
  3. What's their data retention policy?
  4. Can they sell your data?
  5. Are they GDPR-compliant?
  6. Do they allow custom domains?

Most shorteners fail on at least three of these. The good ones nail all of them.

The Honest Take

If you need the most polished UI and don't care about privacy, Bitly works. It's been around forever and integrates everywhere.

If you need simplicity and don't mind that they log data, TinyURL or a basic shortener is fine.

If you care about privacy, custom domains, and referrer stripping, you're picking between a handful of services that actually built privacy into their product instead of bolting it on later.

The market for genuinely privacy-first link shorteners is smaller than it should be. Most companies still think "link shortener" means "track clicks and sell insights." It doesn't have to work that way.
